Up for some bacon and eggs for an outdoor breakfast?
The Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon is a tasty way to fill your stomach and get your morning fix when you’re outside doing stuff!
But first, a bit on my philosophy on the purpose of these Mountain House freeze dried meals. They are not everyday table fare, not in my house anyway! I’ll eat them when I am out backpacking, or doing some other outdoor adventure where fresh food is not easily available.
For those unexpected events, I also have a freeze-dried food selection in my survival pantry.
I DO expect that they taste good, which is why I review them. I DON’T expect them to taste quite like homemade — hot off the stove or the backyard grill. If I wanted a homemade taste, I would stay home!
Folks appear to either love it or hate this particular freeze-dried meal judging from the customer reviews on Amazon. So I am jumping into the fray and providing my own opinion here on my website for this product review.
With that said, the Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon 1.5 serving pouch is on today’s product review agenda, and I do think they are quite tasty! So there!
Preparation
When prepared according to the directions on the back of the package, I find that these pouches of freeze-dried eggs rehydrate to a nice fluffy consistency, — lot’s of big chunky scrambled eggs with tantalizing smoky goodness. Yes, there are enough of those bacony bits included for an honestly good bacon and eggs experience.
The directions do recommend an optional stirring after 3 minutes. I always do this step, — and highly recommend that you do this as well. Why? Because the hot boiling water you pour into that pouch needs to saturate all of the freeze-dried contents. Think about when you make pizza dough; you gotta work out those little dry spots for a good crust.
After that midpoint stir, I let the package sit for another 5 to 10 minutes. Probably a bit longer than directed, but I am not usually running short on backpacking time in the morning. Sit back, watch the sunrise, have another cup of camp coffee and watch the critters running about.
Yes, there will be some water that does need to be drained if desired. That is clearly documented on the product packaging. A good number of Amazon customer reviews commented on watery eggs. Guess they didn’t read the directions and forgot to drain the package.
Be careful when draining so you don’t dump your eggs into the dirt. Take your time and let the water just drizzle out. I use my long handled spoon to help prevent losing any of those eggs and bacon bits. Just hold it across the opening to block anything from making an escape.

Taste Test
These Mountain House scrambled eggs with bacon pouches taste pretty darn good. Lots of big tasty egg pieces and bits of bacon in every spoon full. I supposed the only way these could be better would be to bring a big cast iron pan, a dozen eggs, and a slab of bacon along on the hike.
The 1.5-serving package is not nearly enough for my morning appetite. I need a bit more to help keep me going until lunch.
I’ll include a few tortillas as they are easy to fit into the backpack. I also will bring along a small plastic zip-top bag with some chopped-up peppers and pickled jalapenos to doctor it up.

Overall, there are well over 500 customer reviews on Amazon giving this product an average of 3.5 out of 5 stars. In my own review, I am rating the Mountain House Scramble Eggs with Bacon at a 4.5 out of 5. Why? Because the 1.5-serving pouch is just not quite enough for my outdoor breakfast meals. These should be 2.5-serving pouches like their other meals.
