But hey, it’s a new freeze-dried food product, so let’s give it a taste test.
Mountain House Peanut Butter Bites Review
First thing, what do the Mountain House peanut butter bites taste like? If it doesn’t taste good, we don’t care about anything else.
The peanut butter bites are smaller little freeze dried peanut butter squares, somewhat the size of a larger peanut. Actually, the peanut butter bites are kind of irregularly shaped squares.
What’s my first impression? It was surprisingly good! To me, they kind of taste like peanut butter cookies with just a hint of sweetness. But not too sweet. So yes, they do taste like peanut butter. And yes, I will buy more of these again.
The texture also reminds me of peanut butter cookies. It’s not crunchy as you might expect from a freeze dried snack. It’s more of a crispy-crumbly texture that kind of melts in your mouth.
While some crumbs remain in the bottom of the pouch, these are firm little nuggets, not easily breaking apart with ordinary handling. But they will crush if tightly packed in along with your other gear. So pack wisely.
If you are a peanut butter fan, at only $4.99, consider adding one or two pouches to your next Amazon purchase to taste test.
Mountain House Peanut Butter Bites, The Details
The entire 3-serving pouch weighs 3.4 ounces (95 grams) on my digital kitchen scale.
The Nutrition Facts label says a serving size is “about 14 pieces” or 28 grams. I weighed 14 pieces on my digital scale, which came to 20 grams. After adding 6 more peanut butter bites, the scale now read 28 grams. Which is roughly about two or three small bite-size handfuls.
The pouch is the typical Mountain House mylar-type bag with a zip-top seal. The pouch does not detail how soon you should consume the contents once the package is opened, assuming it’s properly sealed between snacking. But my guess is that you’ll end up consuming the whole bag in short order.
These don’t have that typical 30-year best-by date found on their freeze dried food products. The peanut butter bites I purchased in November 2022 had a best-by date of January 2024, or roughly 14 months after the date of purchase.
Final Thoughts on the Mountain House Peanut Butter Bites
Would I buy them again? Yes I would.
The peanut butter bites exceeded my expectations for taste and texture. Yes, I could also bring a small bag of peanuts, but that is not the point. The do have a satisfying hint of sweetness from the honey used in the recipe.
Pick up a pouch or two of these Mountain House Peanut Butter Bites and give them a try.
I first reviewed the Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice freeze dried back in January 2016. Since then, the Mountain House freeze dried meals have undergone somewhat of a facelift. Such as new product packaging, serving sizes, and in some cases, the recipe has been updated.
Since the Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice freeze dried meal was updated, we decided to refresh and update our review as well.
Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice Review
So today, we have Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice, green peas, carrots, peppers, and onions in a 2-serving pouch. This is one of the Adventure Meals series of freeze dried meals. The Mountain House Adventure Meals have a guaranteed shelf life and taste guarantee of 30 years from the date of manufacture.
I don’t know about you, but the local big-box stores have a very limited selection of in-stock, available for purchase freeze dried meals from which to choose. So plan ahead, and have a selection on hand and ready for last-minute hikes or camping trips, or just-in-case meals. That 30-year shelf life and taste guarantee offer peace of mind that your emergency food storage will be viable when needed.
Many folks complain about the cost of these freeze dried meals. A burger, fries, and a drink from the place down the street come close to that $10.00 mark, if not more. However, the place down the street doesn’t offer all the positive aspects of enjoying a meal outdoors. Spending time outdoors and in the woods strengthens our immune system, reduces blood pressure, increases energy, boosts our mood, and helps us regain and maintain our focus in ways that treeless environments just don’t. You can’t put a price on that.
The package directions on the Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice recommend adding 1 2/3 cups of just boiled water. I think this is a bit too much and the chicken teriyaki will end up too soupy. So I’ll go with 1 1/4 cups or 10 ounces of water.
I can always add a bit more water if needed, but you can’t take it out.
We recommend you try making this at home several times using the same camping cookware used outdoors. Working through any problems at home before getting out into the field makes you better prepared, and you have fewer surprises. You’ll also find out if you like the flavor and texture of the Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice.
With any of these Mountain House products, ensuring you stir the contents at the mid-way mark is highly recommended. I also recommend letting the pouch sit a minute (or three) longer than the package directions call for. Doing so will help ensure everything is evenly rehydrated.
Freeze Dried Food Taste Test
Overall, the taste is pretty good. It tastes just like chicken teriyaki should! It might not be like what you get from the takeout place down the street. But I am confident they don’t deliver out in the woods either!
The recipe could add more chicken and veggies to the mix, but that is only my preference. However, I do miss the bamboo shoots of the old recipe.
I like my food more on the spicy side, so bringing extra soy sauce or hot sauce condiment packets is always in the plan. Some crushed red pepper flakes would also be a good addition.
On December 30, 2024, I checked the Mountain House store on Amazon to get updated pricing for the Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice. It's in stock and available for purchase. It sure is a popular item. There are over 2500 customer reviews, with an average rating of 4.6 stars out of 5. Check it out here.
Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice Review Rating
No complaints with this one. In my view, this Mountain House Chicken Teriyaki with Rice is a keeper! Consider ordering several with your next Amazon purchase to try out in your backyard. I always have an assortment of Mountain House freeze dried Adventure Meals in my camping supply box so I am prepared for the next trip or just-in-case events.
Because the recipe could use more chicken and veggies, I will give this one a rating of 4 stars. I do miss the bamboo shoots of the old recipe.
I keep checking, but as of December 5, 2022, Mountain House no longer offers the Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice freeze dried meal. So I have disabled all the product links on this page. Send them an email and let them know you want it back.
Mountain House Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice is another downright tasty freeze dried food item for your backpack or emergency food stash! This 2.5-serving pouch is the topic of today’s review.
This freeze dried meal is a worthy addition to your camping supply closet, bug-out bag, the trunk of your car, or wherever you might need an emergency meal. As with all of the Mountain House products, the sweet and sour pork with rice is easy to whip
The 2.5 serving pouch makes about 2 1/2 cups of delicious sweet and sour pork with rice. I think 2.5 cups is about right for a one-person meal during a day spent on outdoor adventures.
Of course, you could always share some with your camping friends. If everyone brings a different freeze dried meal it could be sort of a family style camping dinner! Trying a bit of everything!
Preparation and Tips
The package directions on the back of the Mountain House Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice recommends adding 2 cups of boiling water. I think you will find that this is just about the right amount of water.
If this is your first experience with this particular freeze dried meal, consider making it at home using the very same camping equipment used out on the trail. I always recommend doing this because you will quickly figure out what works out best.
Consider the optional stirring after about 4 minutes as noted on the package directions. I never have problems with dry pockets of food when I do this and neither should you. A long handled spoon, such as the one reviewed here will keep your hands a bit cleaner and out of the food pouch.
The package directions on the 2.5-serving pouch recommend 8 to 9 minutes for rehydration. I always let mine sit a few minutes longer to make sure everything gets a chance to absorb all of that hot water. Then give it a good stir before digging in.
Taste and Texture
I like to eat this right out of the bag. Some folks might like making this into a wrap using tortillas to stretch it a bit further.
The first time I ever had the freeze dried sweet and sour pork with rice, I was really surprised at how good it was. You can really taste the pieces of pineapple.
You will also get some red and green peppers. They add a bit of color but I never can taste them. If I had my way, I would add some red and green jalapenos to the mix instead! Sometimes I will bring a few in a small plastic container.
I think a bit of soy sauce will take this up a notch, sort of a back-country umami experience! Consider bringing a few packets from your stash of those extra fast food condiments you have picked up along the way.
The texture of the rice is just like all of the other Mountain House products that have rice. It is not mushy, nor is it like the rice from the takeout place down the street.
Overall, this is another downright tasty addition to the camping food pantry, -- which also doubles as my emergency food stash. Having a few weeks of emergency food on hand just makes good sense! Stuff happens; just watch the news.

Mountain House Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice Review Rating
This is another favorite of mine and I think it will be one of yours as well! Besides the freeze dried convenience, the Mountain House Sweet and Sour Pork with Rice is just a downright tasty food option for any of your outdoor adventures.
I am giving this one a 5 star rating. I think you will agree, this one is a real keeper! Pick up one of these Mountain House freeze dried meals and try it out!
We first wrote this review for the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet in December 2015. Since then, the Mountain House freeze dried meals have undergone somewhat of a facelift. Such as new product packaging, serving sizes, and in some cases, the recipe has been updated.
Since the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet freeze dried meal was updated, we decided to refresh and update our review and add some new images.
As we finish updating our review, Winter Storm Elliott has pummeled the country. It intensified into a bomb cyclone with high winds, blizzard conditions, and flooding. Locally, we have high winds, extreme cold, power outages, coastal flooding, and so on. Our power has been out since 4:30 this morning as I write this.
We are fortunate enough to have a generator. We can run the gas furnace and the refrigerators. At least the pipes won’t freeze. But we continue to drip them. The temperature is a chilly 13 degrees as the sun starts to rise.
The local electrical power provider has said its goal is to restore nearly all remaining customers impacted by the storm by 11 p.m. Saturday. It said if a restoration project extended past 11 p.m. Saturday, Dominion said it would contact those customers.
Events like this remind us to be prepared. Things can and do happen in our own backyard.
Mountain House Breakfast Skillet Review
This morning we have the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet, with shredded potatoes and scrambled eggs mixed with pork sausage, peppers, and onions. The Mountain House Breakfast Skillet pouch is one of the Adventure Meals series.
The 2-serving package also says this is gluten-free and contains no artificial flavors or colors.
While the local big-box stores are convenient, they always seem to have limited variety and quantity. Sometimes, the shelves are even empty. Consider adding a few pouches to your next Amazon purchase to have on hand for last-minute outings or just in case preparedness. That 30-year shelf life and taste guarantee offer peace of mind that your emergency food storage will be viable when needed.
So let’s head out to the garage and fire up the camp stove, and make some breakfast.
Taking a Look at What You Get
As we update these reviews, we’re taking a close look at what you get (by flashlight).
We emptied the contents into one of our stainless-steel camping bowls and checked out what was there. You can see there are big pieces of scrambled egg, hash brown potatoes, red and green peppers, and pork sausage crumbles. I don’t see any pieces of onions, but it’s kind of hard to tell in low-light conditions.
I didn’t measure the contents. The Nutrition Facts label shows 1 serving is equal to 1 1/4 cups of dry mix. So there should be 2 1/2 cups here, and it looks about right.
Let’s get this back into the pouch and make something to eat.
On December 30, 2024, I checked the Mountain House store on Amazon to get updated pricing for the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet. It's in stock and available for purchase. How to Prepare Mountain House Meals
Preparing one of the Mountain House Adventure Meals is as easy as adding boiling water, occasionally stirring, and waiting about 10 or 15 minutes. Eat straight from the pouch for minimal cleanup. A long handle spoon, such as this one, is a must-have for getting all of the tasty goodness from the bottom.
The directions on the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet pouch recommend adding 1 1/4 cups of boiling water. I think this is about the right amount of water. With most Mountain House meals, you’ll need to experiment to find the right amount of water to add to get your preferred texture.
You can always add a bit more water if needed, but you can’t take it out.
The preparation instructions say it’s ready in about 10 minutes. Just mix in the boiling water and stir. Wait 5 minutes and stir again. Then it’s ready 4 minutes later. However, we stir ours again and let it sit for another 4 or 5 minutes. The extra time allows for better hydration of the freeze dried contents.
We recommend making this freeze dried meal at home several times using the exact gear you would use in the field. After a few practice runs, you’ll dial in on the process and how much water to use.
Freeze Dried Food Taste Test
We typically eat this right from the pouch. But it’s hard to get a good picture of the prepared meal. So we emptied the contents into an MSR Alpine stainless steel camping bowl, so you get a good view.
Check out the big pieces of scrambled egg, shredded hash brown potatoes, and pieces of pork with red and green peppers. We’re going to add some hot sauce after taking a few pictures. Hot sauce pairs well with nearly everything.
The Mountain House Breakfast Skillet also makes a good filling for a wrap. Just add tortillas, cheese, and hot sauce. Adding some crushed red pepper flakes will take this up a notch as well. Basically, just add what you like.
Mountain House Breakfast Skillet Review Rating
I have yet to find a Mountain House meal I didn’t like.
Add water and wait about 10 to 15 minutes, and then you have a decent enough meal. The 10 to 15 minute wait time is enough to finish the coffee.
The sodium content is a bit high. But so is nearly every other processed food item you buy today.
The Mountain House Adventure Meals have a guaranteed shelf life and taste guarantee of 30 years from the date of manufacture. That 30-year shelf life and taste guarantee offer peace of mind that your emergency food storage will be viable when needed.
The Mountain House Chicken Fried Rice is this week’s product review here on The Best Freeze Dried Food Guide website. This is some good eats straight from the pouch or as a canvas for jazzing it up any way you please!
One of the reasons we all like freeze dried food is that it provides variety to the otherwise same old boring thing that a lot of folks seem to always bring on their outdoor adventures. You know what I am talking about, — a heavy can or two of pasta or beef stew, or maybe a few packages of ramen. And that is just for one meal. Consider doing that for 3 or 4 meals per day. That adds up to some serious backpack weight. A few miles down the trail and you just might reconsider that decision.
Like a lot of folks, I am very conscious about the weight of my pack and what I put into it! My solution? Freeze dried food pouches!
Mountain House Chicken Fried Rice is a heck of a nice alternative to lugging along those heavy cans or having a big mug of ramen that doesn’t stick around with me all that long. At the end of the journey, those empty freeze dried food pouches are easy enough to pack out, unlike a pile of those messy and bulky empty cans.
Preparation and Tips
I really like the Mountain House Chicken Fried Rice not only for its taste, but is versatility. You can easily jazz this up anyway you want. Want it Indian style, add some curry. In the mood for a southwest experience, add some Mexican spices and a few packets of salsa!
I think that Mountain House is spot on for the amount of water called for in the directions on the package. So nothing special here to remember! This 2.5 serving pouch makes about 2 1/2 cups of breakfast, lunch, or dinner, just enough for one hungry camper in my opinion.
My recommendation, if you’re trying this for the first time, make this at home before trying it on the trail someplace. Use the very same camp stove and cookware to see what works and what doesn’t.
With most Mountain House freeze dried food products, I recommend the optional stirring half way through. Also let these sit and rehydrate a bit longer than what is on the package directions.
Taste and Texture
Some Amazon customer reviewers thought that the taste was fairly generic. My belief is that anywhere you go, any restaurant, any prepackaged meal, is created for that generic taste preference, — what most people seem to prefer.
When I open the pouch there is a good mix of peas, carrots, peppers, eggs, chicken, and mushrooms mixed in. My own preference would be to have just a bit more chicken, but that might just be me?
This rice is just like the rice in other Mountain House freeze dried food offerings. It is not mushy or overcooked, nor is this like the fried rice from the takeout place down you go down the street. Some Amazon reviews commented that this is more like a risotto and I would tend to agree with that account.
When eating this from the pouch, consider adding a few packets of soy sauce for some of that added “umami” experience.
The Mountain House Chicken Fried Rice also makes a good filling for breakfast tortillas. Add a bit of hot sauce and a packet or two of crushed red pepper flakes, — yum!
The Mountain House Chicken Fried Rice Review Rating
I think that the folks over at Mountain House hit another one out of the park with their Chicken Fried Rice. In my opinion, this 2.5 serving pouch is enough for one hungry hiker.
Nearly 200 Amazon customer reviews agree that this is some pretty good eats when you’re outside doing stuff. So I am giving this my best freeze dried food rating of 5 out of 5. Don’t forget to pack along some of those optional condiment packets to bring this to the next level.
With the 10 plus year shelf life, the Mountain House Chicken Fried Rice also makes a good addition to the emergency rations in your survival pantry or emergency food stash.
The Mountain House Rice and Chicken freeze dried food pouch, in the 3-serving size is the topic of this review. Amazon also has the Pro-Pak 2 serving size and the #10 can which contains about 10 servings. You can sometimes find single-serving pouches at big-box stores for somewhere around $5.00.
The 3-serving pouch weighed in at just under 6 1/2 ounces on my kitchen scale, –pretty close to what the printed package weight stated.
This particular Mountain House Rice and Chicken pouch had two oxygen absorbers. This sometimes happens! The packaging says if you forget to remove them prior to adding water, it is no big deal. Just scoop it out of the pouch.
Tip: I carry a big zip-top plastic bag to store the empty food pouches. This method works pretty well for me, keeping any mess off away from everything else.
This 3-serving version of the Mountain House Rice and Chicken freeze dried calls for 2 cups of water. I think this is about right. Some Amazon reviewers suggested less water. I always recommend that when trying something new that you first try it at home. Use the very same camp kitchen equipment that you would have at your campsite. There is nothing like “doing” to figure out what works and what doesn’t work. So to echo what Amelia Earhart said, “The best way to do it is to do it!”
You can start with a bit less water and add a bit more hot water later if you want to try that.
The optional stir mid-way through is also recommended. You are ensuring that all of the food gets mixed around so you lessen the chance of having dry pockets of crunchy dehydrated food bits. A long-handled spoon or a chopstick works well for this.
I made this on a cooler fall day with a temperature of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. After I added the boiling water, I wrapped up the pouch in my beanie hat to keep it from cooling down too fast. The water for this meal came straight from my water filter, just a bit downstream of the South River Falls in the Shenandoah National Park.
Taste and Texture
When made according to directions, and the optional stir, everything rehydrated evenly, with no crunchy pieces, and not watery or soupy. The rice had a nice texture that reminded me of that rice you get at the take-out place down the street. It wasn’t soft or mushy.
There were some nice specks of pimento peppers for added visual appeal.
My only “beef” with this meal is that there isn’t a lot of chicken. When I have these Mountain House Rice and Chicken freeze dried food pouches, I always think that I should have brought along a small can of chicken to doctor it up a bit.
Adding some crushed red pepper flakes does take this up a notch or two in my opinion.
Overall, I say that this is pretty tasty; camping and doing stuff outside, fill me up for lunch or dinner!
I agree with most of the nearly 500 customer reviews that this is another tasty dinner item. My chief complaint is that there is not enough chicken. But that could be why this is called Mountain House Rice and Chicken and not Mountain House Chicken and Rice. So my best freeze dried food guide rating comes in at a 4.5 for this product review.
This review is on the Mountain House Lasagna with Meat Sauce 2.5 serving pouch. It was part of an order from a while back from Amazon, even got free shipping, —on Amazon Prime for only $6.99.
Mountain House offers 3 other sizes of their freeze dried lasagna on Amazon, the pro-pak at 2 servings, the family size at 5 servings, and a #10 can at 10 servings. Each serving comes in at about 1 cup of rehydrated food.
In my opinion, I think that this Mountain House freeze dried lasagna with meat sauce is another top contender in my unofficial “camping comfort food” category.
Preparation and Tips
Lots of Amazon customer reviews recommend adding a bit less water than what the package directions call for. I agree with these comments and find that the recommended amount makes for a loose and somewhat soupy mix. You can always add a bit more hot water if you want, but you can’t take it out once it’s in there!
As always, I recommend the optional stirring of the contents mid-way though. You might consider using a chopstick; they come 2 to a package and weigh nearly nothing. Optionally, a long handled spoon like the one I reviewed here really helps keep the hands clean when digging around that pouch when you get towards the bottom.
Let the pouch sit for a bit longer than the 8 to 9 minutes as described on the back of the package. Doing so will make sure that all of the noodles are rehydrated, -- with nothing crunchy remaining.
On December 30, 2024, I checked the Mountain House store on Amazon to get updated pricing for the Mountain House Lasagna With Meat Sauce. It's in stock and available for purchase. It sure is a popular item. There are over 3400 customer reviews, with an average rating of 4.7 stars out of 5. Check it out here.
Taste and Texture
I think this stuff tastes pretty darn good. It tastes much better than the canned stuff and better than some restaurant versions.
When prepared as I have described, the overall consistency is like that popular Hamburger Helper version. There are nice bits of hamburger and tomato pieces, and the noodles are not overdone.
The cheese is stringy as it should be in a lasagna. Just a note that it will harden up making a difficult cleanup if you’re not quick on the cleanup. Leave the spork in the backpack and use a spoon for an easier time of it.
But, as usual, I just about always doctor up everything with a bit of added hot sauce and crushed red chili flakes. Some extra Italian seasoning wouldn’t hurt either.
When I am outdoors doing stuff it seems like I lean towards the bigger bolder flavors.
The only thing I could use would be a nice big piece of freeze dried garlic bread to go with this! Hear that Mountain House? Another great product idea and tip from the “Best Freeze Dried Food Guide” website!
It is hard to find something not to like about this meal. The taste is good, and the texture of this lasagna is what I think it should be, --camping comfort food. I get the 2.5 serving packages, and it’s just the right amount for one person. The pouch is engineered to not have any hard-to-reach corners, so you can get all of those small bits and pieces, --leaving nothing left!
This is hands down way better than lugging along several of those heavy canned versions along in your backpack. The convenience of a freeze dried, easy-to-prepare, easy to manage food choice for me is well worth that seemingly extra cost. In other words, as my parents say, you get what you pay for!
So at $6.99 for the 2.5 serving pouch, I agree with the nearly 200 customer reviews and give the Mountain House lasagna with meat sauce my own 5-star rating. Try some for on your next outdoor adventure, for your emergency bug-out bag, or part of the survival stash in the trunk of your car.
Today we’re updating our original Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef review first published back in November 2015. We’re adding more of that been-there, done-that detail you’re looking for.
We really like the large selection of Mountain House freeze dried food offerings. It’s all good stuff and we have been eating them for many years.
Besides doing stuff outside meals, Mountain House freeze dried food is an excellent choice to supplement your emergency food supply. FEMA, in their Food and Water in an Emergency publication, say you should strive to maintain a two-week supply of food and water for each family member. And we agree! Don’t forget about your pets.
Freeze dried food is very lightweight and offers a long shelf life, measured in years. Even more, Mountain House offers a 30-year taste guarantee.
Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef Review
There are many versions of the ever-popular chili mac that we have cooked up and eaten over the years in my own indoor kitchen and outdoor grill.
Back in the day, when working for Uncle Sam, we didn’t have a lot of extra cash, so making a pot of chili mac was an easy to make and an inexpensive meal.
Just like cold pizza, leftover chili mac tasted best taken straight from the fridge with an added splash or three of hot sauce.
When I first ran across this Mountain House version of Chili Mac with Beef many years ago, I tossed it in the shopping cart without a second thought. I was sure this is going to be some seriously good eats!
Recently, Mountain House has refreshed its product packaging and even tweaked the recipe just a bit. We’ll share what we noticed about those changes. No worries, it’s still the same great taste.
Old-Style Product Packaging
We still have a good number of what we’re calling the “original” or “old-style” Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef freeze dried food pouches.
These are the specifications taken from the old-style packaging from our remaining supply:
width: 8 inches / 20.3 centimeters
height: 9 ½ inches / 24.1 centimeters
bottom: expands into a food pouch bowl and has a bit of wisdom or campfire talking points printed on the bottom
servings: about 2.5
serving size: 54 grams dry mix
makes: about two and a half cup servings as prepared
The old-style Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef front label shows the package weight as 4.80 ounces (136 grams).
Our digital kitchen food scale shows the unopened package weight as 5.7 ounces (163 grams) averaged over what remains of our old-style Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef freeze dried food pouches.
On December 30, 2024, I checked the Mountain House store on Amazon to get updated pricing for the Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef. It's in stock and available for purchase. It sure is a popular item. There are over 4400 customer reviews, with an average rating of 4.6 stars out of 5. Check it out here.
New-Style Product Packaging
Our measurements of the new-style product packaging:
width: 8 1/4 inches / 21 centimeters
height 8 1/8 inches / 20.7 centimeters
weight of the empty freeze dried food pouch: 18 grams
weight of the oxygen absorber: 5 grams
total weight of the freeze dried mac and cheese with beef dry mix: 110 grams
The Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef nutrition label:
servings: 2
serving size: 54 grams dry mix
makes: two 1 1/4 cup servings as prepared
These new-style Mountain House freeze dried food pouches are plastic-coated mylar.
The Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef front label shows the package weight as 3.8 ounces (108 grams).
Our digital kitchen food scale shows the unopened package weight as 4.7 ounces (133 grams) and averaged over our supply of the new-style packaged Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef freeze dried food pouches.
Few big box stores offer even a limited selection of Mountain House freeze dried food products. For last-minute needs or purchasing for long-term storage, consider other options that offer a greater shopping selection. Recently, we picked up a large assortment of Mountain House meals, including a couple of these freeze dried chili mac offerings for just under $9.00 each with free Amazon Prime shipping.
The Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef product page shows well over 2000 of mostly 5-star customer reviews. This is evidence of a popular product that customers are happy with and they buy time and time again. Myself included.
You’ll see that Mountain House does offer Chili Mac with Beef in a #10 can. The #10 can label says there are 10 1/4 cup servings. I read that as five hungry-people servings.
Freeze Dried Food Pouch Differences
Both the old-style and new-style Mountain House freeze dried food pouch product packaging requires you to remove, or tear off, a significant amount of the pouch at the tear notch. About 2 1/2 inches / 6.3 centimeters, or 4 grams of the package weight.
Just below the tear notch, is another 1/2 inch / 1.2 centimeters, to the zipper seal. In our opinion, Mountain House could better to optimize packaging and reduce waste.
You might notice that Mountain House now includes recycling information on every product they sell. Instead of tossing these freeze dried food pouches in the trash, you can mail them, with pre-paid postage, to TerraCycle.com. Way to go Mountain House! Check out the Mountain House TerraCycling program here.
These new-style packages also feature rounded corners. Mountain House must have read one of my suggestions. Finally, those squared-off pointy corners are now a thing of the past.
Mountain House also continues to entertain us by printing outdoor wisdom one-liners on the bottom of each food pouch. Some of them have made for lively conversation around the nighttime fire.
With this new style package, Mountain House went from a 2.5-serving pouch to 2 servings. In our opinion, we would prefer that extra half-serving.
Mountain House also cleaned up the recipe ingredients. Gone are the soy, colorings, and other additives. More and more folks are reading those food labels researching what they eat.
Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef Preparation
Start by removing the top portion of the freeze dried food pouch at the tear notch. Next, remove that oxygen absorber packet. The oxygen absorber packet will likely be visible.
Then, gently pull open the bottom of the pouch to form a bowl.
The Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef in the new-style packaging calls for 12 ounces / 355 milliliters of boiling water added to the 2-serving pouch. We think this is just the right amount of water.
The old-style recipe recommended adding 16 ounces / 473 milliliters of boiling water for 2.5 servings. In our opinion, that was just too much water and made for soupy chili mac. If you still have some, dial it back to 14 ounces / 414 milliliters.
Okay, here is where the recipes differ somewhat. Basically, both of the recipes say to mix in the boiling water and seal, giving the freeze dried chili mac with beef some time to hydrate. Next, open the pouch, stir, seal it, and give it more time before enjoying.
However, in practice, our experience has been the macaroni has not had a chance to fully absorb the water and the sauce mix. The macaroni was not quite the al dente as we like and it needed a few more minutes of hydration.
Here is Our Recipe
So, this is our recommendation, use the 5-5-5 method.
First, at the tear notch, carefully tear off the top part of the pouch, trying to get a straight tear. Remove the oxygen absorber. Then, open out the bottom of the freeze dried food pouch to create a bowl.
Second, measure out the water into your camping mug or pan, and add any desired spices. Cover and bring to a boil.
Third, carefully pour the boiling water into the freeze dried food pouch, mix and stir, seal, then let the freeze dried chili mac rest for five minutes to hydrate.
Next, after the five minutes have elapsed, open, mix and stir, then reseal for another five minutes of resting.
Finally, open, mix, stir and reseal, giving the freeze dried chili mac a final five minutes to hydrate.
To recap, we stirred, mixed, and mixed again over the 15 minutes of hydration. Plenty of time for any added spices to blend and flavor our freeze dried chili mac.
So after 15 minutes, give it a taste and see if it’s how you like it. Maybe it needs another five or so minutes?
Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef Taste and Texture
The Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef is tasty good right out of the food pouch.
There are bits and pieces of beef, kidney beans, and macaroni, all swimming in a tomato sauce.
However, like most every prepackaged meal you might purchase, it’s a blank canvas. Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef included. It’s not spicy the way we like it, but not quite bland either. It’s probably a consumer preference as it allows for individual upgrades.
Finally, this is one freeze dried food pouch that most definitely has a place in the freeze dried food pantry. Like most freeze dried food entrées, you can easily take this up a notch or three by adding your preferred spice selections.
Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef Review Rating
In our opinion, the Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef makes for some good downright tasty and filling good-eats any time of the day or night.
However, I am giving this my own 4.9 out of 5 stars for taste, texture, and ease of preparation. We’re docking a partial star because we think this should have remained at 2.5 servings.
So this is one freeze dried food pouch that most definitely has a place in the freeze dried food pantry and emergency kit.
Freeze Dried Food Hacks
As part of our Mountain House Chili Mac with Beef review, we have a few tips on how to kick this freeze dried meal up a notch or two.
Consider adding crushed chipotle peppers to the water as you bring it to a boil. Chipotle peppers are easy to make at home and easy to pack. Just add one or two chipotle peppers to a small zip-top bag and you’re all set. Check out our post here on homemade chipotle peppers.
Optionally, or in addition to the chipotle peppers, consider adding crushed red pepper flakes. Those take-out pizza places offer single-serving size packets.
Both thyme and basil pair very well with freeze dried chili mac with beef. Add a teaspoon or so of each of these dried spices to the water as you bring it to a boil.
And hot sauce pairs well with nearly everything, including freeze dried chili mac with beef. Locally, a popular fast-food chicken restaurant offers hot sauce condiment packets.
Fast-food chopsticks make excellent stirring utensils and can multi-task as a lid-lifter for your camping mug cooking setup.
Also, consider using a cozy in cooler weather to help insulate the freeze dried food pouch as the hot water hydrates. Those Amazon bubble-lined plastic packaging can be repurposed to make great a cozy. They are nearly weightless and can be rolled down tight to minimize bulk.
The first time, practice at home using the very same gear that you might use in the field or out on the trail.
We would recommend that you first make one or two of these at home. In short, try them out first, just like you would with a new piece of gear.
Also use the very same equipment you might use while hiking, camping, or found in your emergency kit. There is no better way to see how it all works together, or not, than to practice at home. Practice using the very same gear you might need to rely on and work out any shortcomings or issues you make a note of.
Take notes so you don’t forget, and decide what works best for you. Describe what you thought of the results. And, what would you want to try out next? Once you have it all figured out, transfer your notes to something more portable that you can take with you.
This is what we use for the final set of notes once we have our process dialed in, we’ll record our instructions, preferred amounts of water, and what other spices we like mixed in. The notebook is water resistant. How cool is that!
Shelf Life
Mountain House freeze dried meal pouches have an advertised shelf life of 30 years. That “best by” date is located on the back of the new style pouch just beneath the preparation instructions. However, Mountain House says that this freeze dried food doesn’t really “go bad” after this best-by date.
The long shelf life makes freeze dried food a great option to stockpile the pantry.
Up for some bacon and eggs for an outdoor breakfast?
The Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon is a tasty way to fill your stomach and get your morning fix when you’re outside doing stuff!
But first, a bit on my philosophy on the purpose of these Mountain House freeze dried meals. They are not everyday table fare, not in my house anyway! I’ll eat them when I am out backpacking, or doing some other outdoor adventure where fresh food is not easily available.
For those unexpected events, I also have a freeze-dried food selection in my survival pantry.
I DO expect that they taste good, which is why I review them. I DON’T expect them to taste quite like homemade — hot off the stove or the backyard grill. If I wanted a homemade taste, I would stay home!
Folks appear to either love it or hate this particular freeze-dried meal judging from the customer reviews on Amazon. So I am jumping into the fray and providing my own opinion here on my website for this product review.
With that said, the Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon 1.5 serving pouch is on today’s product review agenda, and I do think they are quite tasty! So there!
Preparation
When prepared according to the directions on the back of the package, I find that these pouches of freeze-dried eggs rehydrate to a nice fluffy consistency, — lot’s of big chunky scrambled eggs with tantalizing smoky goodness. Yes, there are enough of those bacony bits included for an honestly good bacon and eggs experience.
The directions do recommend an optional stirring after 3 minutes. I always do this step, — and highly recommend that you do this as well. Why? Because the hot boiling water you pour into that pouch needs to saturate all of the freeze-dried contents. Think about when you make pizza dough; you gotta work out those little dry spots for a good crust.
After that midpoint stir, I let the package sit for another 5 to 10 minutes. Probably a bit longer than directed, but I am not usually running short on backpacking time in the morning. Sit back, watch the sunrise, have another cup of camp coffee and watch the critters running about.
Yes, there will be some water that does need to be drained if desired. That is clearly documented on the product packaging. A good number of Amazon customer reviews commented on watery eggs. Guess they didn’t read the directions and forgot to drain the package.
Be careful when draining so you don’t dump your eggs into the dirt. Take your time and let the water just drizzle out. I use my long handled spoon to help prevent losing any of those eggs and bacon bits. Just hold it across the opening to block anything from making an escape.
On December 30, 2024, I checked the Mountain House store on Amazon to get updated pricing for the Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon. It's in stock and available for purchase. It sure is a popular item. There are over 2700 customer reviews, with an average rating of 4.3 stars out of 5. Check it out here.
Taste Test
These Mountain House scrambled eggs with bacon pouches taste pretty darn good. Lots of big tasty egg pieces and bits of bacon in every spoon full. I supposed the only way these could be better would be to bring a big cast iron pan, a dozen eggs, and a slab of bacon along on the hike.
The 1.5-serving package is not nearly enough for my morning appetite. I need a bit more to help keep me going until lunch.
I’ll include a few tortillas as they are easy to fit into the backpack. I also will bring along a small plastic zip-top bag with some chopped-up peppers and pickled jalapenos to doctor it up.
Overall, there are well over 500 customer reviews on Amazon giving this product an average of 3.5 out of 5 stars. In my own review, I am rating the Mountain House Scramble Eggs with Bacon at a 4.5 out of 5. Why? Because the 1.5-serving pouch is just not quite enough for my outdoor breakfast meals. These should be 2.5-serving pouches like their other meals.
I first reviewed the Mountain House Beef Stew freeze dried meal in October 2015 while in the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area on a West Virginia backpacking trip. Since then, the Mountain House freeze dried meals have undergone somewhat of a facelift. Such as new product packaging, serving sizes, and in some cases, the recipe has been updated.
Since the Mountain House Beef Stew freeze dried meal was updated, we decided to refresh and update our review and add new images.
Mountain House Beef Stew Review
Today we have the Mountain House Beef Stew with a hearty gravy of beef, potatoes, carrots, and peas. No artificial flavors or colors. It’s even certified gluten-free. So this is a great option to bring along on your next outing.
The 2 serving pouch is part of the Adventure Meals series. Mountain House also offers Beef Stew in a #10 can. Both have a guaranteed shelf life and taste guarantee of 30 years from the date of manufacture.
While the local big-box stores are convenient, they seem to have limited quantities. Sometimes, the shelf is even empty. Consider adding a few to your next Amazon purchase to have on hand for last-minute outings or just in case. That 30-year shelf life and taste guarantee offer peace of mind that your emergency food storage will be viable when needed.
Taking a Look at What You Get
We emptied the contents of the Mountain House Beef Stew into one of our stainless-steel camping bowls and checked out what was there. You can see there are quite a few pieces of beef, potato, peas, carrots, and a powdery gravy and spice mix. Of course, there is the oxygen absorber that we will responsibly dispose of.
I didn’t measure the contents. But it looks like about 2 cups of dry mix.
How to Prepare Mountain House Meals
The package directions on the Mountain House Beef Stew recommend adding 1 3/4 cups of boiling water. I think this is a bit too much, and the beef stew gravy will end up too soupy. So I’ll go with 1 1/2 cups or 12 ounces of water, as I prefer a thicker stew.
You can always add a bit more water if needed, but you can’t take it out.
The Mountain House Beef Stew preparation instructions say it’s ready in about 10 minutes. Mix in the water and stir. Wait 5 minutes and stir again. Then it’s ready 4 minutes later. However, we stir ours again and let it sit for another 4 or 5 minutes. The extra time allows for better hydration of the freeze dried contents.
We recommend making this at home several times using the exact gear you would use in the field. After a few practice runs, you’ll dial in on the process and how much water to use.
Freeze Dried Food Taste Test
The Mountain House Beef Stew is a favorite. It tastes like how a beef stew should taste. The taste is just like a stew that has been cooking for hours on your own stove. Other than some freshly ground black pepper and a bit of hot sauce, it’s a meal in a bag with very little cleanup needed.
However, with some pre-planning, you can doctor this up and take it to another level.
For example, adding some dehydrated onions. Maybe a handful of dehydrated veggies. Just be sure to account for the extra time and water. In my experience, dehydrated onions and veggies require a 1-to-1 ratio of product to water for hydration.
I’ll let the onions and veggies hydrate for 5 minutes, then add the 1 1/2 cups of water needed and bring it all to a boil.
On December 30, 2024, I checked the Mountain House store on Amazon to get updated pricing for the Mountain House Beef Stew Unfortunately, it wasn’t in stock and available for purchase. Although it was available from other vendors. It’s a popular item. There are over 2500 customer reviews, with an average rating of 4.6 stars out of 5.
Mountain House Beef Stew Review Rating
I agree with the thousands of Amazon reviewers that this is a good product. Years ago, it was available in a 2.5-serving pouch. The 2.5-serving pouch was a good meal.
As with all Mountain House freeze dried meals, you can doctor them up as you see fit with added spices and home-dehydrated extras.
Consider ordering several with your next Amazon purchase to try out in your backyard. Have an assortment of Mountain House freeze dried meals for last-minute outings, just-in-case events, or you’re tired after a long day of work and what you have would take too long to cook and fix. Don’t forget about the 30-year guarantee.
